Exploring Valetta

9 juli 2017 - Sliema, Malta

Today was another succesful day,

Ik woke up at 9:30, i didn't have any othrr obligations, so i could take my time and relax. I went downstairs and got some breakfast. Sadly, even though Malta is not an english colony anymore, they still have that 'delicious' white bread... But at least we had Nutella, which made it more tolerable.

I grabbed some of my belongings, like my wallet and my phone and walked out of the house, looking for a new adventure, it was 10:30. I walked down the hill ( my hostfamily is located on top of a hill, so when we go to the roof, which is 6 stories high, we can see the whole city) and ended up at the docks again, i saw that the ferry to valetta, the capital of Malta, was just about to leave, and i thought "why the hell not, let's go to Valetta and see what it's all about". So i paid my ticket and hopped aboard, i forgot to tell earlier (this will happen a lot) but yesterday i recieved a student card from good ol' Tony. This card gave me crazy discounts on a lot of hings, such as public transport, museums but also all kinds of restaurants and shops, so that's pretty neat. I now only had to pay 1.80 for a retour ticket on the ferry, instead of 4 euros.

It was not even 11:00 and i haven't been outside for long, but the sun is already making sure that everyone is begging for a small gust of wind; it was hot.

I arrived at Valetta 10 minutes later. Valetta is a city located on a small peninsula, it was build shortly after the siege of Malta, and the architects wanted to make sure that anyone who wanted to siege Malta is going to have a really bad time, and they succeeded in doing so. The city has enormous, and by that i really mean big, walls. The city itself is very small, it's only about 1.5 km in diameter, and with the see on 3 sides, it is impossible to get lost. Every building was some kind of architectural masterpiece, the Maltese people wanted to make clear that they were religious, by building a cathedral every 4 blocks. And as if the 60ft high walls weren't good enough, they decided to build large fortifications on each side of the city. One of those forts is called 'fort saint-Elmo' (apparently that guy from sessame street did more than just presenting a kids show) the fort was open for tourists (with money) but yet again i saved some money by presenting my student card. Malta's national war museum was located in the fort, so i thought i'd check it out, it was pretty interesting and i've learned and seen a lot. Afterwards i decided to continue my quest to discover Valetta, i walked through many small roads, whilst walking i heard some extremely loud noises, it's like someone is throwing hand grenades left right and ventre, i've heard those noises before whem i was in my apartement, several kilometers away, and decided to see where it's comming from. I followed the bangs and eventually i ended up in a small street where several children were popping balloons... Yes, this was the cause of all the noise, that can be heard miles away... Due to the high buildings and small streets, the sound of a popping balloon echos so much that it can be heard throughout the whole city.

I continued my walk and ended up in a small park, with a nice view over the harbor on the eastern side of the city, it was very relaxing, because it was't as busy as the other parts of the city. I went to one of the benches with some shade and the beautyful view and decided to continue reading my book; the entry of christ in brussels, by dimitri verhulst. I actualky started to like that book a lot, because there are quite a few funny expressions and topics. After 2.5 hours i've had enough and walked towards the main gate, I bought a milkshake along the way, it was still extremely hot and i already emptied the bottle of water that Tony gave me.

I headed back to the ferries at around 17:00, while walking home i discovered some nearby grocery shops, that'll come in handy in the future.

I had some lasagna for dinner, and whilst eating i met simon and romain again, apparently they were in a hurry; it was 19:50 and they were expected to be at a club at 20:00, they still had to eat dinner, change clothes and travel to the club. But they weren't bothered by it for long and relaxed when they realised that they wouldn't make it in time amyway, so we just talked and had a laugh.

In the evening i decided take a walk around thewestern part of Sliema, along the beaches, whilst enjoying the cozy nightlife mood.

There are still so many things that i haven't discussed yet, but i've already gone on for far too long, so i may talk about it another time.

Tomorrow will be my first day working at the waterpark, so i am looking forward to it. Have a good one, Till tomorrow.
