First day at work

10 juli 2017 - Sliema, Malta

Today was alright,

I'll keep it short this time because it's pretty late right now and i don't feel like writing that much at the moment.

I woke up and immediately got some lunch, in this case some cereals because i now hate that white bread with a passion. I packed my bag and went om my way, first, i had to go to a student centre, to recieve some extra information about my job and other activities. Useful information such as "you can buy a weekpas for the bus for only 21 euros" well, that's very nice, m'am, but it's cheaper to to buy each induvidual ticket, even without using my students card, which i may or may not have forgotten to take with me from the students centre, whoops. So i walked back to my appartement and grabbed my lunch, oh if only i could express my happiness and suprise in words when it turned out it was white bread...

I took the bus towards ________ (fill blank space with a random arabic name), i got out and walked another mile in the heat of the sun, shade was rare and my only equipment to combat this evil was a 0.5 liter bottle of water...

I arrived at the waterpark and waited near the office building for someone to pick me up and show me around, and i waited...

So i eventually phoned the manager (at least i thought he was) and he told me to go trough the ticket booth and wait for the manager to arrive, and so i did, and i waited...

2 hours later the manager finally arrived, meanwhile i had plenty of time to finish my first book, and to introduce myself to some of the other employees at the reception. The manager seemed to have forgotten about my internship. But luckily her dementia wasn't severe enough to completely forget me and it wasn't a problem, because i could help at the reception. Fantastic, i already knew the people and a comfortable working environment; i didn't have to stand in the sun for 8 hours unlike so many other employees. Imstead i could work in am airconditioned room.
For those who are interested, a list of my coworkers (the ones that i can remember):

Tracy: coordinator of the employees in the ticket booth and shop, she is not really coordinating us though, she is just a little bit older and thus more experienced in doing the same job as the others., 25 years old and Maltese.
Mereille: maltese girl, about 16 years old, not the brightest but always very focused on her thrilling job: scanning tickets and sitting behind the cash register.
Ana: an Italian girl, about 16 years old and quite fun to have a conversation with, her thrilling job is to help the visitors to put their waterproof bracelet on.
Denise: a czech girl, about 16 years old, and she is also behind the cash register, she is very talkative, don't know if that is a positive trait or not...
Anyetta (or somrthing like that): a Maltese girl, slightly older than the others, so i suppose 17, and she works at the nearby restaurant.

And by now you also might've noticed a certain correlation; yes, they're all female and yes, the're all my age. So no need to spam me informing me about "how lucky i am". It ain't gonna happen ladies.

My work was tollerable, i was able to relax in a chair in an airconditioned room all day, whilst watching ober the souvenir shop, which was my main task. At first i thought "heck, with these crap-quality items and unbelievebly high prices, i'll have the most relaxed job ever, because all these factors point to one thing, and one thing only: novody is going to be dumb enough to buy this junk.
Now, looking back on it, i realised that i missed one factor; the tourists in Malta... It was quite busy. The fact that we only had one computer in total, to deal with both all new visitors and the customers in the shop wasn't great, and to add to that; there were 3 women trying to use it all at the same time, it was an unimaginable chaos...

During my first day at work i already experienced quite a few odd moments, but i will make a compilation of them in a later edition of the blog, because i believe i said something about me not wanting to write a lot today, and guess what happened...

I came home from work at 18:00, i chilled a little bit, i went downstairs, threw a plate full of chickennuggets and fries in the microwave, went upstairs and continued to just relax, so my evening was fairly uneventfull, which is also good for once.

I realise that i still have missed out on quite a few subjects, especially my residence (thank you for reminding me of this :). I will address this in later editions as well.

Have a good one,

Wouter
